چکیده

In the radio – host galaxy optical luminosity plane FR I and FR II radio–galaxies are clearly divided. Since the optical luminosity of an elliptical galaxy is an indication of the mass of its central black hole, we propose that the FR I–FR II dividing luminosity is a function of the mass of the black hole powering the active nucleus. Furthermore, as the radio power gives an estimate of the total kinetic power carried by the jet, the FR I–FR II separation can be re–interpreted as occurring at a constant ratio between the jet power and the black hole mass. There is also convincing evidence of a correlation between the radio power and the luminosity in narrow emission lines. As the latter results from photoionization by the radiation produced by accretion, we can estimate the ionizing luminosity and find that the separation luminosity can be also re–expressed as a constant accretion rate between ∼ 10–10 of the Eddington one. This possibly regulates the accretion mode and the consequent presence of nuclear outflows.

On the Bl Lacertae Objects/radio Quasars and the Fri/ii Dichotomy

In the frame of unification schemes for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), FR I radio galaxies are believed to be BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects with the relativistic jet misaligned to our line of sight, and FR II radio galaxies correspond to misaligned radio quasars. The Ledlow-Owen dividing line for FR I/FR II dichotomy in the optical absolute magnitude of host galaxy–radio luminosity (M...

The HST view of the FR I / FR II dichotomy ⋆

In order to explore how the FR I / FR II dichotomy is related to the nuclear properties of radio galaxies, we studied a complete sample of 26 nearby FR II radio galaxies using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and compared them with a sample of FR I previously analyzed. FR I nuclei lie in the radio-optical luminosity plane along a tight linear correlation, which argues for a common synchrotro...

We test the hypothesis that radio galaxies are a random subset of otherwise normal elliptical galaxies. Starting with the observed optical luminosity functions for elliptical galaxies, we show that the probability of an elliptical forming a radio source is a continuous, increasing function of optical luminosity, proportional to L. With this probability function and the luminosity function of no...

Distant FR I radio galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field: Implications for the cosmological evolution of radio-loud AGN

Deep and high resolution radio observations of the Hubble Deep Field and flanking fields have shown the presence of two distant edge-darkened FR I radio galaxies, allowing for the first time an estimate of their high redshift space density. If it is assumed that the space density of FR I radio galaxies at z>1 is similar to that found in the local universe, then the chance of finding two FR I ra...

No evidence for a different accretion mode for all 3CR FR I radio galaxies

We have analyzed the optical and radio properties of a sample of 3CR FR I radio galaxies which have Hubble Space Telescope imaging capable of detecting optical cores. The jet powers of the FR I radio galaxies are estimated from their low-frequency radio luminosities, and the optical core luminosity is taken as an upper limit on the emission from any unobscured accretion disc. We argue that if t...
